How It Works
Wood stain coverage varies by wood porosity: softwoods like pine absorb more stain (150-200 sq ft/gal) while dense hardwoods like maple absorb less (300-400 sq ft/gal). Open-pore woods like oak fall in between at 200-300 sq ft/gal. Always apply a pre-stain conditioner to softwoods to prevent blotchy results. Gel stains work better on blotch-prone woods.
